A major systematic review and meta-analysis published in The BMJ: British Medical Journal in May 2026 analyzed 69 clinical trials concerning nearly 154,000 participants to evaluate calcium and vitamin D supplementation for the prevention of falls and fractures. Researchers found that calcium and vitamin D used in combination was linked to a somewhat lowered fracture risk — a meaningful finding for anyone who has watched a parent or grandparent struggle after a fall. While no supplement is a magic bullet, this kind of large-scale evidence helps guide practical, whole-person care. (1)
The second paper, published in Frontiers in Endocrinology in April 2026, looked even more broadly at what vitamin D does for aging bodies. Vitamin D supplementation, especially blended with physical exercise, is associated with improvements in muscle strength and postural balance in osteoporotic patients, and a decreased risk of falling.
